Default Musicians listen with their. . .

. . . ears and guitarists listen with their eyes. What do you think about this statement?

Massive generalization/stereotype...

Guitarists are musicians. It's like saying pianists aren't musicians.

I suppose the person quoted was taking a swipe at guitarists in general. If meant in jest, I put it on the same level as drummer jokes. If serious, it is obviously based on insufficient data and therefore valueless.

I am with Shades on this. First you adore the music. If music was not likable, I would not care about the looks. IMO.

If you’re counting votes, I disagree with the OP.

All guitarists are musicians but not all musicians are guitarists. The classic square/rectangle scenario.

I believe the ear is the most important

I think a guy trying hard to sell a crappy guitar with no success said that.

Guitar players take the brunt of musical jokes...probably because there ARE a lot of willfully ignorant guitar players out there...we all know the guy who thinks his "creativity" will be stifled if he dares learn the names of the notes he's playing, or some garbage.

I do think you can view the word "Musician" a bit like "Artist" perhaps...anybody can paint a picture, but are they an artist? Anybody can play a guitar, but are they a musician?

But in the end, all that leads to is bad vibes and hurt feelings.

If I don't like the way a guitar looks, first and foremost, I won't own it.

After we get past that: It has to fit me, physically.

After that's sorted: I can now play it comfortably to determine if the final arbiters, my ears, are in agreement.

I'm not sure I understand it at all actually. But in a band setting it's pretty important to have visual cues and a lot of that has to do with eye contact. In particular when it's time to end the song or when it's your time to do a solo.

Partially true, as evidenced by youtube for example. On the other hand probably true for other instrumentalists as well.

Eyes can't hear. Someone once told me my feet smell, I said, "No, my nose does all the smelling".

That's what makes this a huge generalization. I cook, therefore I'm a chef. I take pictures on my phone, therefore I'm a photographer....you get the picture.

Or better yet, I'm Kanye West, therefore I'm an artist...
