For a hairline crack? What's the point? And for a crack that's misaligned, how is this preferable to using a clamp? Still sounds pretty awkward to me.

I did not say weighting was preferable to using a clamp for attaching cleats. I merely outlined how it could be done.
The advantage is that you don't have to buy a clamp.
I have used weights when access inside the guitar is not possible and clamping is awkward.
