NUD - Pono Mango Pineapple Concert Uke
My brother gave me a new uke for my 60th birthday, unusual as we haven't exchanged gifts in decades, however...
I've already got a concert uke, nothing fancy, but its pickup-equipped, which is a must for me. The sound from this Pono is nice, but, well ... it's a uke. The mango wood is unusual, but a little dull. It was ordered from The Ukulele Site, so I know how much it cost. Don't want to look a 'gift horse' in the mouth, or mention it to my brother, so I contacted TUS and hoping they will let me send it back to exchange for a baritone (with pickup) that I would have more use for.

Happy birthday - I think I comprehend your statement and hope it is resolved to your satisfaction. Frankly I donʻt see why not, reasonable.
Many years ago my brother bought me a guitar, it was very pretty and it was awful on the ears. He was in agreement and I returned it for one that I played for many years. I wish you all the best. |

There's certain gifts that are much better left to a gift card than trying to buy for someone without running it by them... a musical instrument is definitely one of them.
I would go ahead and try to exchange it, if you don't want to hurt your brother's feelings you can tell him there was a defect with it and it had to be exchanged.

Heard back from TUS, they'll do the exchange, just need to pay shipping charge, so good deal for me. My brother will never know about the exchange.

Nice birthday present. Just out of curiosity, will the baritone uke also be a Pono? My only baritone is an $80 cheapie, since it gets relatively little use - maybe a half-hour every four months or so. I'd like to have a nice baritone, but cannot justify it given the low usage rate (for me).
FWIW my mango tenor is quite bright and punchy. Brighter than mahogany and comparable to koa in tone. (I have two from the same maker, one koa and one mango). Last edited by Earl49; 05-12-2016 at 01:30 PM. |

He will if he's a member here . Seriously, I don't blame you, but I would probably explain it to him. Be honest. He will likely understand. Then you can thank him for the baritone uke and he can appreciate you enjoying it.

No, he doesn't play any instruments!
The baritone is a Kala, won't be the all-solid wood of the Pono, of course.
