Default Rainsong N2 Neck compared to Martin

Thinking about a Rainsong parlor.

Can anyone compare their N2 to any of the Martin neck shapes?

My main players are a 000-28EC and an old 30's 00-17. Love those necks!

thanks

I'm not a Martin aficionado by any stretch, but I'm pretty sure at least your 000-28 has a low oval shape. You may need to dig to find out the info you need on your vintage. RS has a very unique design and has been the topic of discussion in many of threads here in the CF section. The N2 is U-shape that has been compared to old Les Paul electrics. Some really like, some are on the fence, and some really can't bond with it at all. RainSong really took a chance getting rid of the N1, a neck that I've played before on a RS Jumbo. That neck wasn't really thin, but it was more "Taylor" like in my hands.
I own a Shorty and I have really grown to appreciate the neck even if it took some getting used to. It is really hard to explain; the design is ergonomic and comfortable but "alien"? There simply are no modern guitars out there with similar necks that I've played.

Space age tech meets vintage neck!

This is a pretty good description. I like the neck.

Bears repeating cause I think this is a true statement: it still amazing me that a company would put all their eggs into this unique basket. Wouldn't you naturally question why you alone had such wisdom? Also telling to me is that the N2 has been out there for a while now. Are there any imitators that have seen the light? No.

Man you are on a roll, first time I have ever seen the profile demonstrated visually. Good job. Many have said its not thicker which you show is true, but the U is a pretty dramatic difference, actually more than I would have thought. Can you imagine this with demo with a slim Taylor?

Hey Steve,
Before I did this cut out I would have sworn the two were twins.
At the 2nd fret the D28 measures 1.812" across the fret board
The RS H DR1000 N2 measures 1.835" which is only .022" wider or just shy a 1/32" which only a machine would notice.

The Depth from the back of the neck to the top of the 2nd fret is .026" thinner on the N2 compared to the D28 which is about a 1/32".

Wow! Nice pictures! Definitely a "u".

Kind of makes me want to do that experiment with all my guitars. Be the turner is very much like that. Just feels round.

Thanks!

Thanks for that visual Vance! I'm seeing a definite U in the RS neck and a soft V in the Martin neck- would you agree?

Yes, soft V . I wouldn't have thought it to be. That template taught me something as well. I've been playing that Martin 40 years and never thought it was V-ish.

Thanks for doing this. I've never tried a RainSong. I'm open-minded (you have to be to be into CFs in the first place), but very much liking the Taylor neck profile which my Emerald and CA also closely share, I can't imaging I'd like the RS...but who knows...I'd certainly give it a try.

I haven't any negative things to say about the N2. I have a Taylor 420 that I bought new in 92. I've had more problems with hand cramps over the years playing it.

Err....maybe it's simply that there is no one right neck shape or even right set of neck shapes. That the N2 has been out for a while now suggests that a lot of people must like it (or else the wouldn't keep making it). I certainly don't have any problems with mine.
