Taylor out of saddles?
So I want to adjust my guitar action on my 2014 taylor 914ce and would rather use a new saddle to grind on and keep the original intact so I can retreat if necessary. But after a couple months of checking on Taylor's website, they constantly post the bone saddle which is on my taylor as out of stock. Makes me wonder how they keep producing guitars with these saddles. Anyway, interested in hearing from anyone who has played on various saddles. For example, Martin has the om retro series ( on my short GAS list ) using tusq saddles. They say it has a more evenly distributed vibration for their fishman UTS piezo pups. My taylor has the new ES2 which has 3 side saddle piezo pups. Not sure of the difference in saddle material with the different pups and if moving to tusq over bone is the right move here. I've looked at other bone wave-compensated design saddles for taylors as replacements, but curious to know if the different wave design compared to the taylor bone saddle matters much. I know guitar action is top priority for plugged in seasoned guitarists, so I am interested in your views on this.

Guitar Parts and More has some nice cuts of bone. As far as tusq, they have all kinds of marketing nonsense pushing that product but I still hate the way it sounds, ust or not. Bone sounds superior on every guitar I've tried it on (though ivory is my fave).

That's the website I've been looking at. Tempted to try the ivory as well.

Taylor's online website store is not really all that great. Their people are fantastic and amazing on the phone. They prefer a one-on-one support experience I think so they want you to phone them. I bet you could call them and get one.

Greg, have tried calling Taylor? I seriously doubt they are really out of stock, but if they are give Bob Colosi call, he will set you right up.

Big +1 for Bob Colosi. I've purchased 2 saddles for Taylor's from him in the past and he is first rate and knowledgeable.

I've used Bob's "factory second" saddles on my 214 to save a few bucks, worked great just not colored perfectly. I'm about to order one from him for my 512ce. Last time he shipped fast and he answered all questions back quickly too.

I've ordered some bone saddles from Bob Colosi before. Class A guy.

Yes. I ordered an FWI and a bone saddle. Both exceeded the Tusq IMO. My preference leans slightly to the bone. Seems to have a slightly warmer tone than the Tusk with added clarity. No loss of volume.
The FWI sounded much like the bone but has a touch of brittleness to the sound. This is very slight. BTW, this is on a 2005 Taylor 714 cedar top. I now have them set up for three different heights. Bob knows his stuff and is very helpful. Not the kind of guy that just wants to sell you something.

Just for the sake of variety of opinion, I'll add that while Colosi's a very nice guy, I wasn't happy with the quality of the product. I ordered a couple of expensive hard ivory saddles and they were not cut the same. One annoyingly sloped too steep on the high strings, causing the high E to want to slip out of place. I had to reshape the whole thing myself. Seeing that he charges twice as much as others, I shopped around and found equally good service at Guitar Parts and More. I actually like their ivory better as well. Not trying to drive business away from Bob, just letting people know there are equal good, and cheaper options.

Out of saddles?
I guess it's time the pony up and get some more. Ughh! Yeah, Colosi would be the guy to call. |
