Counting was drilled into my head as a kid playing in the school band. Couldn't do it out loud (instrument had a mouthpiece) but that clock was ticking in my head all the time. If you didn't count you didn't know when to come back in, which was quite embarrassing.

I still hear the clock ticking in my head listening to the radio.

Does it necessarily keep me from speeding up during the course of a solo guitar piece? No, that is what the metronome is for. I think counting keeps me from adding or subtracting beats, though.

One of the first on line guitar teachers I ran across was Griff Hamlin, Blues Guitar Unleashed or something similar. He is a huge proponent of counting out loud. If you can't do it you need to, he says!
