There's also the matter of wasting electricity (maybe not a big cost to you, though globally all this sort of unnecessary small electrical use ads up to a LOT of extra electricity used).

(I realize though that your concern was more about damage to the equipment, e.g. if things get left on accidentally - I have wondered this same thing about some of my equipment, hard drives, computers, etc).
