Default Collings?

I've never tried a Collings electric... until this week. And I liked it a lot. I have a few 'nice' electrics (higher end Fender/Gibson/Gretsch etc) but nothing this high. I'm kinda jonesing for the 290, single cut, two P-90... maybe even the Bigsby version of that.

Any thoughts here?

I think Bill Collings builds the best guitars in the world today, electric and acoustic.

If the question is "Collings?" the answer must be "Yes!".

I never "believed" in going as high-end in electrics as acoustics until I discovered Collings. Still don't own one, but they've changed my attitude that an electric guitar is just a platform for some decent pickups.

I had a similar experience. I'm primarily an acoustic player and I didn't really understand how electrics could be different from each other until I tried a Collings 290. What a difference from every other electric I have played. You can't go wrong.

I agree the 290 single cut looks great.

Does anyone know if Collings will do a custom 1 3/4 nut width on the electrics?

This would really peak my interest.

Lucky me, I've got a 290 single cut with TV Jones pickups and a Bigsby.

A guy showed up at our weekly band jam and just listened for a bit. Finally we got him to play. He took out a guitar that looked like a Les Paul, and I couldn't see the name on it. He plugged it into a beat up old Crate amp. In just a few strums and lead lines, I decided that guitar put out THE sound I hear in my head when I think about what I want my guitar to sound like. It was a City Limits Deluxe. Simply the best LP-type guitar I ever heard.

I was fortunate enough to tour the Collings factory today and I agree. With you!

Default The 290

The 290 DC S is one of the newest members of the Collings electric family. But don’t let the dead simple Les Paul Jr. lines and bare bones visage fool you into thinking this is some kind of exercise in mass-market efficiency. This is a Collings through-and-through—a guitar that significantly refines one of the most elegantly simple templates in electric-guitar history.

If there’s a downside to the Collings 290 DC S, it’s price. At $2850, it’s not exactly a cheap path to simplicity. But, like most Collings we’ve seen over the years, simplicity belies the complexity of tone and responsiveness to playing nuance you experience when you put fingers to strings. And what the 290 DC S gives the imaginative and resourceful player is a blank slate and a city bank’s worth of sweet sounds to work with—a luxury perhaps, but one that’s beyond value as a musician.

This is a picture of my Collings I-35 with a Bigsby. It is one outstanding electric guitar!

My amateur playing probably doesn't deserve it, but this one has killed any desire for guitar shopping for a few years, and it appears it will stay that way.

Beautiful, too... but I'm done. I plumped for a Gibson TV yellow Junior Special with two P-90s. Almost a third of the price of the 290 but certainly not a third of the guitar. I'm content with it. No idea why. My acoustic/electric sensibilities are so wholly different.
