Carbon Curious: are you finger-style or flat-picker?
Of the carbon players that hang out here: the majority of the time: do you play with your fingers or a flatpick?

Mostly finger style (70%?), but strum as well. Not much true flat picking because, well, I'm crappy at it and don't practice that much

mostly fingerstyle here, and I find that lately when I'm strumming I do the Kramster.
I am training myself to use a thumb pick right now- I like the percussive accuracy that Tommy Emmanuel gets when he is playing songs that require it.

Flat picking... because the rock 'n roll in this acoustic player is strong. Plus, you get to try all the different picks out there that would like to make you think they are "the best."

Fingerpicker. I started out playing guitar in '76 on my '58 Strat (I had bought off a guy for $500 as my first guitar...sold it in '02 for a healthy sum) and used a pick. I bought my first acoustic in '79 and for some reason, a pick didn't feel right to me, so ever since I've played only with my bare fingers, no nails, but do not consider myself a "fingerstyle" player in the form of guys like Doyle Dykes. I use my thumb and up to all 4 fingers depending on the song in a picking/strumming fashion, playing mostly classic folk rock, with a bit of old country and blues thrown in...anywhere from Roger Miller to Led Zep. One reason I prefer playing bare finger is that I have no reliance on picks so that if I'm ever faced with having an opportunity to play somewhere and I don't have a pick (it happened from time to time), my playing isn't compromised. On rare occasion, I have picked up a pick to try it, but unless it's a pure strumming song, I don't use it well. I admit that there are times when the tone of a pick is something I wish I could achieve with the warmer, mellower tone of bare fingers, but I just accept it as a playing style as prefer. I feel more 'connected' to the guitar. My wife says she much prefers the tone of bare finger playing.

Ditto, I think this makes you more of a flat picker? I know I strum as part of my hybrid style.

I had to vote finger picker, because that is about 70-75% of what I do. But I also grab a flat pick and strum the rest of the time. There was no option for "both".

Fingers only. But have promised myself someday to try to get used to using a pick also.
