Just to be clear, Ned, when you talk about egg shaped domes, are you talking about carved tops or "flat-tops " ? ie do you rely on the bracing to give you the egg shaped dome, or is it pre-carved before the braces are glued on?

While a slight dome is said to give a little more stiffness to the top my main concern is with humidity changes and cracks. My thinking (could be wrong, still figuring things out) is the top does not change lengthwise much so why does it need an arch? It is really the width of the guitar where the top and back expand and contract. So maybe a cylinder outline would be more suited. But then you introduce the bracing and the figure 8 shaped sides, more than my mind can handle yet.
