Tom Petty's take on the 12 string.
This is from Reverb's interview with Tom Petty and his comments on the Rick 12 string.

Tom Petty
I'll have to watch the video later, but Tom was influenced by some groups who also used 12 strings as their signature sound, the Byrds for example.

I started watching the Netflix special "running down a dream" last night, not realizing its 4 hours long. I watched about 2.5 hours of it and was tempted to stay up and watch the rest. I'll have to come back and watch the rest later.

What they don't mention is Tom's extensive use of an '81 Guild D-212 acoustic 12-string, both in the studio and live.
As the story goes, someone gave it to him, and within 10 minutes, he had essentially written Free Fallin".

Thanks for posting this. I'm still in shock over losing Tom Petty. He has been my favorite since I first heard his music in the early 80's. He blended the punk attitude with classic rock instruments and very singable melodies.

Thanks for that!! I really enjoyed reading that interview.
I have always been a fan of the Rick 360/12; I have one. It does have a very narrow neck and nut width, like 1 5/8". It's kind of ridiculous for a 12-string or any guitar for that matter. Fortunately, I have relatively narrow finger tips, so I can work around the narrow neck, mostly. It sure has a great sound... But it always takes me 15-20 minutes to get used to playing that guitar accurately because the shift to that narrow neck width across the fretboard seems so drastic. - Glenn

Was never really tuned into Tom's prolific use of the 12 string, before having read that interview...
Going back and listening, I'm not sure how I ever missed it! |

It’s well worth the time investment! I’ve watched it in its entirety a few times. So many wonderful quotes and so much amazing gear to see.

I saw a You Tube video of his last concert. The last song he performed was "American Girl", playing a Fender electric 12 string...
