Well, I guess the procedure went well today. I'll have the ace-wrapped bandage around my palm for 5-7 days, see the doc after that, and get thestitches out a bit later.

The poster who mentioned that the numbing shots were the worst part was correct. The shot today was actually worse than the cortisone shots. But I can tell the anesthetic is starting to wear off but I dodn't think the pain will be too bad.

When I move my fingers into a small fist to exercise them there's a little popping feeling but that may just be the stitches. I may put a call into the nurse tomorrow just to make sure it's to be expected. All in all, I'll probably be glad I had it done.

Glad you made it through the surgery and you are back to posting. Just sorry it had to be done, but with the advancements in the medical communities, it is good to know that most of the time they can help us. You are now one day closer to the healing....

Had the shots twice before having the tendon-release surgery on my left thumb. Was sore for a couple of weeks until the stitches were removed, but was playing dulcimer within a week of surgery. Of all surgical procedures, it has the highest success rate. Whether surgery is necessary depends on the severity and duration, as well as what's causing the locking of the joint. If it's due to a nodule on the tendon, and cortisone doesn't soften the nodule to the point where the tendon slips easily through the sheath, then surgery to enlarge the sheath is in order.

Should mention that my friend had it done on his right thumb a few years ago--and it inspired him to start fingerpicking again, better than ever!

Well, last night my guitar was calling to me and I just had to try to play. Even with the thick bandage wrapping my palm and constricting movement, I was able to pick through some of my favorite JT tunes without too many missed strings. Things are looking up.

That's great - just don't push your limits over these next few days. That bandage will be off in no time, any swelling will have gone away and it's all down hill from there. Good luck!

I took the bandage off today and it looks pretty good. The curve is out of the finger and we'll see if it pops tonight. Still can't bend it back like I used too be able to do and was able to to after the cortisone shots. But that's not a requirement for pickin' and grinnin'.
