Who are some of your favorite acoustic guitarists?
My gosh..
Where do I start? Well...the reason I started wanting to learn guitar is after I saw the movie Help and saw John Lennon playing "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away".. His 12 string sounded so cool and he looked so cool..there started my love affair with the guitar... So...here goes- John Lennon Paul McCartney-Blackbird was one of the 1st songs I ever learned... George Harrison-Mastering "Here Comes the Sun" was a turning point The Everly Brothers Keith Richards David Gilmour Duane Allman - Little Martha Pete Townsend- Behind Blue Eyes..Tommy-the album Bob Dylan Neil Young Cat Stevens-Father & Son Joni Mitchell Neil Diamond - Solitary Man, Cherry, Cherry David Crosby Stephen Stills John Denver Jerry Reed Chet Atkins Jimmy Page-Tangerine, Bron-Y-Aur, STH, Going to California.. Jeff Beck-Greensleeves Eric Clapton Nancy Wilson - Crazy on You, Dog & Butterfly Gram Parsons Emmylou Harris Jim Croce Don McLean Don Felder Joe Walsh Glenn Frey Laurence Juber Christopher Parkening Liona Boyd Just a few...

As far as acoustic virtuosity and uniqueness of songwriting, I'd have to say one of my personal favorites, if not my overall favorite, is Monte Mongomery.
Better-knowns that have been the most influential to me are JH, SRV & EC. unoriginal, I know, but it is what it is. |

I would add Peter Frampton, Gary Moore, Chris Rea, James Taylor, oh and how can I forget Lindsey Buckenham. It's funny, I primarily listen to rock music, but I can't stand playing it. |

Please consider Nick Lowe. I have ignored this man for 30 years. (He did Cruel to be Kind in 1979).
Now he has white hair and plays solo acoustic. This guy can entertain with his voice and one acoustic guitar. His rhythm is completely solid. His chord voicings are not elaborate, but they are sweet. He keeps a moving bass line that gives his playing a real foundation. His songs have meaning too. He wrote Peace, Love and Understanding popularized by Elvis Costello. I have a new appreciation for this man after seeing him perform on a rerun of Austin City Limits. |
