The two best acoustic guitar albums are both by John McLaughlin: "My Goals Beyond" and "Belo Horizonte"

Steve Howe - Natural Timbre,
Blind Guardian - Forgotten Tales Blackmore's Kingdom (fake album, made from Blackmore's Night instrumentals and instrumentals of Greg Joy, Celtic guitarist) First acoustic (some not fully acoustic) albums that I've heard that have made me think that there is something really cool in acoustic sound, and I've turned my head to acoustic music and started to study different techniques and styles in acoustic guitar

Hot Tuna - Hot Tuna.
Recorded live New Orleans coffee house in Berkley in '69. This album defined my acoustic direction for years to come. It was my first exposure to playing that wasn't strumming or strumming accompanied by lead playing. My initial reaction was total disbelief. "What...? How...? Can he ....? How many guitars is that ?!??!?! No way! Just Jorma and Jack?!?!?!" You get the idea. Many, many! years later, and many, many! hours sitting in front of a record player lifting and dropping that needle, I still play most of the tunes on that album. Still sounds as fresh to me today as the day I first heard it. Also my fist exposure to some one (semi-) famous who wasn't a really great singer. The first time it occurred to me - "Hey, maybe I can do this..." Finger picking rocks! David

Personal Faves Today
Well,
Not possible in a thread to list everything, but I'll pick two that I listen to most right now and are off the beaten path a little. First is Jim "Kimo" West - "Slack Key West." Not a technical virtuoso, but really gets the slack vibe out there well, for a Haole. Second is Hunter Van Larkins, "Myriad." Listening to that a lot right now, just really creative and melodic, unlike a lot of the newer guitarists. Of course, all Neil Young, Michael Hedges, ... ad nauseum.... |
