Midi controller for drums?
I use EZ Drummer, which has built in grooves that you can modify. In my DAW (Reaper) I can modify the beats mechanically. But, I would love to be able to do this through a controller, perhaps with a drum pad(s). Can anyone tell me if this is a good solution and if so, can you recommend a small controller under $100?

Well, there's the Drum Kit Kit from arduino, if you're a handy person you can get is a kit and solder it yourself, or they've started selling them pre-assembled.
Other than that it is possible (with some tweaking) to use RockBand drums as a midi controller as long as you find a set that connects by usb. I managed to find a set for $5 at the local Goodwill. |

I appreciate the reply. I was just thinking more of the lower end midi keyboards that also have pads attached.
Maybe something like the Akai Professional Mini 25 for $99 @ Amazon? Todd

Try the M-Audio Axiom 25. I owned one and I still own an Axiom 61. The 25 had kick-*** little drum pads. And for some reason - IIRC - they sounded without being plugged in.
I don't know why. My 61 pads don't do that. I have to use a MIDI out cable to a synth on MIDI channel 10. Maybe the 25 had a cable plugged in but automatically mapped and triggered drums on the synth. I know it was great for drum pads. The 61 has the same pads. But I have to specifically map them to the drums on the synth.

Yes, well, I've learned through personal experience that sometimes when you declare a price, it's a fluid thing. If you see or hear something that really makes a difference and it's more expensive, your budget increases.
I saw that with a friend here this weekend. He sings and plays flute. He's looking for a new mic that he can use for live vocals and flute. We were trying the new Neumann TLM 107, which worked well into my Fishman SoloAmp, but the top octave of the flute was about 13 dB louder than the middle and lower octaves. He confessed that it was mostly his playing that was the problem. We ended up down in my studio and I put a Schoeps cmc641 on the flute. Bingo! Problem vanished and the flute sounded great; like a finished track. He was amazed. He's now looking to sell an EV RE20 ($300) and a Neumann TLM 103 ($350) in order to build a fund for the $2000 Schoeps. |

No doubt I sold a pair of Shure KSM 44's to help fund a single Schoeps CM6 4
But me thinks $100 to $1600 is going to take at least a few stout pints of fluid

Kev,
That's what the flute player thought until he heard his flute in the cans and then during playback. His jaw hit the floor. He said, "That mic makes me sound better than I really am!" I just chuckled. If you ain't heard one, well, you ain't heard one! Over and Out, Ty Ford |

Maybe a Korg nanopad2?
Only costs £29 and although it's not as sensitive as say a Maschine etc it'll let you set up drums a lot quicker\easier. |

For $100.00
http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/...tep/intro.html I have the Arturia SparkLE and I can only imagine the pads feeling the same. Forget the nanoPad had one as a friend of mine and has lousy sensitivity. I also have an Akai MPD32 but you really need to modify the pads so not too confident with their other offerings. With the BeatStep you will have to program the notes but the same applies to all of these kind of controllers. You can power it via usb or a simple cell phone charger with mini usb. Granted there are many other applications they illustrate, but I can't think of a controller at this price point that has the feel I like. |
