Recording on IPAD2 - external mic question
Hi, I am recording audio&video (vocals & acoustic guitar) on Ipad2 using the built in Camera function and the built in mic. (Then uploading to Youtube.)
I'd like to add a standalone mic to to better capture audio (for one thing, proximity effect). Would Apogee MIC work (record audio) with Camera function? Thanks |

For clarification, here's an example of what I'm trying to improve (link below) - this was recorded using the ipad2 and Camera (default app), using the ipad2 internal mic (which is obviously some distance away from the guitar and vocals). I just figure with an external mic, and with good placement I should be able to improve the overall audio.

I use an iPadb 2 to record most of my music.
But I never use the internal mic. I have an Alesis ioDock. I can plug external devices like mic's into it. That gadget was a great musical purchase. You need an audio interface Here is a list of them. http://auriaapp.com/Support/auria-audio-interfaces A few are inexpensive. I'd check out the Focus-rite iTrack solo. You'd need an adapter though for the 30 pin iPad 2 connection.

I have an Alesis IoDock gathering dust in my basement - not because of any issue, simply because I no longer have a use for it.
If you're interested after doing some research, please PM me. I'd love to see it go somewhere where it would get some use. Cheers, David

But note - the early ones had 'noise' issues. Alesis fixed it with a firmware update. The ioDock has the iPad 30 pin connector. I don't think iPad3's and beyond have the same connector. But the ioDock is perfect for my iPad2. This is a project I finished two weeks ago with my iPad and ioDock. Guitars & synths --->mixer Mixer ----->ioDock ioDock ----> into iPad2. Recording app Auria.

Thank you for your replies. I'll have to look into the ipad2 dock as an alternative.

Can you use a USB interface with the lightning cable? I have the Focusrite Saffire.

I'm using an iRig Pro connector. It will take a standard mic xlr, and a guitar jack. It can take a 9 volt battery to supply phantom power. It sounds excellent.
IK Multimedia also make some mics that work directly with the iPad, also, and would be worth checking out. If you're planning on doing any other recording on the iPad, I'd suggest the iRig Pro, though.
