Default Anyone else get a guitar hung up at U.S. customs?

I bought an acoustic guitar from a shop in Switzerland. I went into this deal knowing I wasn't going to see this guitar for a while. It's been a while plus a few. It seems to be hung up at customs in New Jersey now for nearly a week. Is this normal? Should I be worried? It's got rosewood of course and the seller, a guitar store in that country, says they obtained a CITES permit before shipping.

US customs go at their own pace. I ship worldwide from the UK, and the vast majority of my US orders arrive within a week. However, I have had a few that get held up in customs - the worst was over three weeks! No rosewood or other complications - it just sometimes takes a while...

Cheers,
David

Default Customs

I work for a company with factories in The Netherlands and Germany. Customs always adds a few days for commercial shippers, who almost always have the paperwork in order.

Small personal shipments seem to get less priority and take longer.

I wouldn't worry. It's just a beauracracy taking its sweet time.

A few years back when I was in London I bought a Royal Doulton figurine for my wife and shipped it back. It was in customs for six weeks!

Last year I ordered another one from a store in the Midlands and had it in a week.

It's entirely normal. We import lots of guitars from international builders. Even with all our paperwork done exactly right, they can slide right through Customs and Fish & Wildlife in under 24 hours, or take 3 weeks.

I will say, however, that the last Ag Supervisor I spoke to said the CITES rules have left them absolutely swamped, with no increase in manpower. Even in Memphis—the Fedex hub, with all the relevant government offices sitting adjacent to the Fedex facility—there are only a handful of people tasked with inspecting many thousands of packages.

If it goes on too long, it might be worth a call to the carrier, who should have a record of any potential missing paperwork. I'm not totally sure what the requirements are for private importers, but our guitars have to have 1) Lacey paperwork, 2) CITES paperwork (if there's rosewood), 3) Our F&W import permit, 4) Our APHIS protected plant permit.

I shipped a banjo to Japan that was held up for 6 weeks by Japanese customs. I suppose they were trying to figure out whether or not they wanted any more banjos in the country.

Just be glad that they're not Cuban cigars...

You'll get your guitar eventually!

Yes. A custom coming in internationally after a 15 month wait for the completion of the build got hung up in customs for a week. It was the winter season. When I got the guitar I opened the case the day following arrival. The finish was completely checked on the soundboard. After much ado seeking resolution over another 3 months of dead-ends I gave the guitar away to a needy kid ending a frustrating experience on a positive note.

My Probett Rocket III was shipped from the UK April 27th. It made it to the US the next day but didn’t clear Customs until June 2nd. There are three separate agencies that have to sign off on guitars. This was a new guitar with all CITES and import/export documents in order.

I'm about to get a guitar from Canada (to the US). Will that be any easier than importing a guitar from overseas?

it did - but the buyer was in a panic by the time he got it. That was the worst case. I also shipped banjos to Germany, France, Sweden and England - with only minor delays.

I think the import process is the same.
