Default Show Us Your Band

Me and the boys got together Thursday night, and before you know it music broke out! That's me on acoustic to the right of the drums. (Some 225 of us, counting the instrumentalists, of Sons of Jubal at First Baptist Church, Lilburn, GA - the crowd overflowed their 1,200 seat capacity.) Sorry I don't know how to resize the picture - I'm just proud I got it to post!

The picture looks great cotten!
It's a beautiful thing when people get together to make music.

So, when practice is at your house, do you do pizza and beer like everybody else?

I bet the people in the front pews can only hear the brass instruments.

My house is not quite big enough for all the guys to come over, and we're not big on beer. The people on the front hear much more than just the brass, but of course the instruments nearest them are the loudest. With a group that size, it's not as bad as you'd think. You really hear the whole room, and it is a phenomenal sound!

Great photo, John. It must be a great, fulfilling experience. I've enlarged and scanned the photo to see how many guitars are among the band and if I'm not mistaken, there's just you on acoustic and maybe the fellow to your right is playing electric? Do the guitars cut through the mix and be heard? Hope so. I assume this is the same group that you played with overseas somewhere. The photo looks similar except for the venue.

You're right on all counts, Tom. The only guitars are me on rhythm, a friend on lead, and another on bass, but yes, we can indeed be heard, depending on particular song we're doing at the moment. Our concerts are about 90 minutes long - not everyone plays or sings on every song. We use our small amps as stage monitors, and go into the PA via direct boxes. Our sound guy is a Pro and does a great job with the house mix. He wished for more than 48 channels on the board for this concert.

And yes, I've been part of this group since 1977, and though most of our concerts are in Georgia, I've travelled with them to places like Moldova, the Czech Republic, China, North Korea, Germany, France, and late next April we will be in England and Wales. Five years ago, we were the largest group of Americans ever invited into North Korea. (Most of our younger guys couldn't go - that's me playing bass.)

That is great.

Some of my fondest memories are of playing clarinet in high school. We had an excellent band of about 100 or so members. There's just something about playing together in a group that size that is so powerful and moving.

I am not even going to ask how one gets a gig like that. I don't imagine you answered an ad in a trade circular! LOL! Nice picture!
