Default Banjo rolls are killing me....

T I M A A M I T T I M A A M I T T I M A arggg!!!

Taking forever. A little progress, plus I don't always remember to practice them. The keeping of an Excel list of things to do in a practice sitting and keeping track of them is starting to look good.....

Baby steps approach Rick. I'm working full arpeggios too.

A banjo picker wouldn't know nutin' 'bout no "A"s. We use T, I & M. That's it; that's the list.

You could try frailing like Rudy suggested:

Here's Bill Keith's answer: "[...] here's my current thesis of what you should be able to do with your right hand. First, you lay out every possible lick - it doesn't take very much time to write out every possible combination [note: Actually, using 3 picks on 5 strings, there would be 759,375 possible combinations]. All of them should be fluent, because only when everything is of a very similar degree of difficulty can you change from one roll to another in a mid-thought. So you have every possible direction, everything down, second nature."

You only use T, I, & M. Any more than that gets you kicked off Banjo Hangout and you lose your subscription to Banjo NewsLetter.

True as to three fingers. When I used to play bluegrass banjo it was with metal thump, index and middle finger picks
and the other fingers touching the top or floating. Even Avant Grand player Bela Fleck stuck to that, let along Earl Scruggs.
Of course you can personally do whatever you want.

I've always played banjo rolls using my T, I, and M. Of course, you can try doubling up your thumb, or any other finger, but no matter how much you work at it slowly you're bound to get into trouble when increasing your speed.

Think of it this way: you'll only go so fast hopping on one foot.

In one of Al Petteway's tunes, Spindrift, there's a quick 4 string roll and back. Must use time. I'm breaking it down to the two components, down, then back.

Which reminds me that I didn't practice this today yet....
