Default resonator strings???

Getting ready to put a new set of strings on my Fender chrome bodied resonator and wondered if there were any suggestions out there? Coated or un-coated? Guages? I'm mainly playing it lap down with the nut extension, dobro-style, but may like to change it back once in a while.

Hey jack,
I use Elixir lights on all three of my resonator guitars, but I rarely use them Dobro style. Wish I had more info for you.

Hmmm. Interesting. I believe using lights on a reso is an unusual choice. Most tend to use heavier gauge strings. You may want to visit here...

and do a subject search for "strings". That ought to keep you busy for a while.

i use d'addario flattops and paul beard reso strings in various gauges. the beards are a little brighter. the flattops are a little quieter. neither last as long as my dean markleys, but you can't have everything in a reso string. (yet.)

if you're presently doing lap slide, i'd probably just day go with the flattop reso set, the EFT13s, i think they're designated.

on my dobro i go a little heavier on the 1st and 2nd, but on my weissenborn the EFT13 gauges work well (i tune down to D and C tunings, fwiw).

I prefer the D'addario flattops for lap style playing. They are quieter with a slide and I like how they age.

Beard strings came on my Beard guitar. I liked those, but I haven't bought any more because you have to order them and I like John Pearse as much or more and I have been able to find them at local stores. Just make sure you buy the John Pearse with the wound G string. I have Black Diamond on the Beard now. I like them fine. They're much better than D'Addarios. I've never had anything on my reso except medium gauge.

I use Newtons 13s on my National Vintage Steel Tricone.
