What's that noise?
I have a (cheap) large diaphragm condenser mic which is making this noise
http://soundcloud.com/brian-acton/la...-condenser-mic Anybody know what it is? I know very little about electronics, but I think it sounds like a capacitor somewhere. Should I throw it away? |

weird noise
I know what you mean.
It sounds great as a 'sound'. Makes me think of squeaky plastic. It's dead annoying on a vocal take, though! |

In the early days, condenser mics were called capacitor mics. What it sounds like to me, maybe, is a corrupted diaphragm. Diaphragms can become dirty and create sounds like this when there's more than X amount of moisture in the air. The moisture gloms on to the dirty of the diaphragm and creates a path for current flow when there isn't supposed to be any. This current leakage creates all sorts of noises.
If your environment is very humid, or you're exhaling into the mic, you can kick off this sort of sound. How do you fix it? In the worst case, have someone who knows what they're doing clean the diaphragm. Second best, put the mic in a plastic bag with a handful of desiccant packs to absorb the moisture. http://www.multisorb.com/products-an...FQLxOgodDjAAig Some cheap condenser mics can come this way from the factory because they aren't made in a "clean lab." Stuff in the air gets on the diaphragm and when it get humid you get noise. Regards, Ty Ford |
