Advice on amps/preamps/passive pickups GSMini
Parent needing advice. My son 14yo has a Taylor gs mini that we just added a jjb 330 system to. The guitar came with a free stagg acoustic 10 w amp that seems to be ok but he has a 15w fender blues junior that just sounds kind of plinky when he plugs into that one. Can he use that one effectively with the jjb system if he gets a pre amp or he has an overdrive pedal for his electric guitar will that help and act as a pre amp? Does he just need to stick with acoustic rated amps? He's very good just successfully performed "Eva Waits" by Tommy Emmanuel live on stage just used a microphone for the amplification. Any help is welcomed.

...that a hard one to answer...in general, electric guitar amps are not the best way to amplify acoustic guitars but some folks do get results that work for them...(not me)...a preamp may or may not produce the sound you and your son are wanting to hear in the Blues Junior...likely not....a preamp is a good idea with any passive acoustic guitar pickup...JJB makes one...there are many others out there at all price levels...experimentation is the way...

Thank you for your reply..Will look into a decent pre amp. One more question, we are looking to get him a shure microphone for recording either the 57 or 58. Any preference of one over the other? Can he use this with a USB converter to record stuff in garage band or just straight into his iPad? Thanks again. No experience with this stuff just learning as we go along.

The acoustic amps have special speakers .. normally with separate woofer and tweeters. Or at least a "Full range Speaker" ... Powered Speakers (PA) work really well too ... |

http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/MXL/603S ...i personally use a 2 channel Focusrite itrack interface...they make a simpler one.... https://itrack.focusrite.com/products/itrack-one-pre ....it will provide phantom power for a condenser mic... ...hope some of this helps |

My suggestion on getting good recording.
Check out the ZOOM Recorders. These are fantastic and have built in mics. They just make it simple and there are a few to choose between $99-199. Best money spent in beginning .. period. |
