Default FIU bridge collapse

I know that you've seen the pictures on TV. I saw the billboard showing the finished product on the news this morning and I went and found this picture;

They placed the pre-cast bridge and took out any supports before they built the super-structure that was supposed to support the bridge.

Wow!

That's incredibly stupid. Someone should face criminal charges here.

Heard they were using some rapid construction process developed by the University and funded by a Federal grant. Apparently, not the first failure of construction using this process.

What’s the saying? Quality, Cost, Speed; pick any two.

ABC wasn't developed by FIU, but they have a engineering school that is advancing the technique.

Rapid bridge construction is nothing new. The basis of the concept is that the parts of the bridge are pre-cast off site and lifted into place. Most bridges are built this way. I worked on the Miami Metrorail over 35 years ago and all of out spans were pre-cast. The new San Francisco Bay Bridge sections were built in China. Pre-cast sections are being used more and more in all phases of construction.

Here's a good article attempting to explain the FIU collapse;
