Default testing for finish type

For those of you that have a lot of repair work - what is the best way to determine the type of finish used on a guitar? Is it nitro, polyurethane, varnish, or?

Using applicable thinners in non conspicuous areas to see if it softens is one way.

After you do it for a while, you can guestimate pretty well without thinners and so forth
