Default What is it called?!

I'm putting together a list of materials for ordering and am looking for the strips that go inside the back down the center seam....
What is that strip called? I can't seem to find it.
Is it something most people just cut on their own?
Thanks
B

Yeah just cut it from left over top wood. I call it the back strip or back reinforcement strip (too long).

Most makers make the strip so that the annular rings, grain lines, are perpendicular to the backs grain lines. Or just to the joint line itself. Wood expansion is greatest between the annular rings so if it's orientated the same way then the strip when it expands will actually try to pull apart the back joint. Having said that, you do see occasionally some back strips that are orientated the same way.

You should have plenty left over from your top or even the back if you don't like contrast in your back strip. I always like the look of what ever the top material is.

Since the decorative strip on the outside gets called the 'backstrip' or backstripe,' I like to call the inside one the 'back crossgrain reinforcement strip,' cumbersome as it is.

Back in the day, the old time cabinetmakers would have called the decorative outside strip the "center stringing" .

"Stringing". Noun. Singular. I don't think I have ever heard or read anybody in the luthiery community refer to it as stringing, however.

The easy way to get this stuff is to just cut it out of top cutoffs. It's about 1" wide.

I make my own from leftover top material. It helps if you have a drum sander to thin it. I call it the "back-seam batten".

Back joint reinforcement. To me the back strip is the decorative piece between halves seen on the outside.

Also it is VERY easy to thin after gluing to the back. A small block plane will thin it super quick. And I shape mine rounded from side to side anyhow, so it is all in the same operation.

I glue mine to the back in the same operation as the braces, so the short pieces of batten between braces must be all final shaped. Many ways to skin a cat...
