10s on my old 24.75" scale guitar. Been like that forever.
The 25.5" guitar I recently bought came with 11s. I like that feel too.

When I play with my rock band I use 10s. When I'm using my electric for a solo gig or to play jazz or standards, I use 11s.

I put 9's on my Strat and 10's on my Tele....both Elixer polywebs....now that I've tried them both, I prefer the 10's.

As far as electric guitars go, I'm still just a babe in the woods, experimenting to see what suits me. I've played acoustic guitar all my life and electric guitar is just a new sideline for me.

9's for standard tuning. 10's if tuned lower than Eb.

Hybrid 10 - 52 set.
Started using 9's, but went to 10's as I played more. Still felt something was lacking in the lower strings, and I read Hendrix used to use multiple sets of strings with heavier on the bottoms but lighter on the top (easier bending), so gave that a try. Of course, Jimi didn't have the option of buying a hybrid set back then. |

Most of the pros I know use 9s but I found while background singing on a Skyville show last year with Billy Gibbons, that he uses 6s made for him in Mexico. Kenny Greenberg told me he had been killing himself for years with 9s and then to find this out blew his mind. It's got nothing to do with the size or thickness, it's all about how you effect it, Billy said.

9s on a couple an 10s on a couple. Most folks played 9s or 10s back in the day and I still do.

I use .011s and can bend a minor 3rd on the G string easily.
I do have .010s on my Ibanez RG-460, but that has a Floyd Rose style floating bridge, it won't settle properly with anything heavier (I've tried). All that said - start with .009s and build strength & technique. Then you can decide if you want to move up to a beefier set. Keep in mind that with magnetic pickups, the more metal (thicker strings) the more energy you're generating. It's not just louder, it's "thicker", less "tinny". That's my main reason for the 11s, I just think they sound more solid than lighter sets. Plus with 90% if my playing being acoustic, and my main acoustic is a Taylor 812ce with .012s...I move to .011s and feel positively hedonistic

Why not be steered by your fret finger strength? allow it to 'dictate' the tension that thus suits your playing preferences & style.By little trial & error you,... will find the string gauge that suits.once found..no looking back.
The string height assists.the 'relief' that suits. So will the string tension then found. I'd rather be able to move my fret fingers effortlessly than being hindered by physical discomfort that increases at every fret. Every players fret finger strength is unique. The guitar can be tailored to suit, including the string tension preferance.A set up should be done with all these contributing factors considered. |

10's are just right. 9's are too loose. Never tried going heavier.
