Yes I am sitting here looking at mine and it says: “Vintage V22 Infinium.” I got it new a couple of months ago.

He asked what the difference was, not whether there was one or not.

I believe the answer has to do with their tube management electronics in the newer Infinium, which are supposed to allow longer tube life, and the yellow pilot light, which had been blue on the older non-Infinium model.

Hi RP,

There’s a guy who shows up at a jam I play each summer with a Bugera. It sounds really good—to my ears it sounds like some classic British amps.

I’d say it’s a good choice.

Back when I lived out in your neck of the woods, I bought a Fender pro jr from Ch’ville music. Still have it—all-tube, 15 watt. It’s basic; no reverb, no EQ. It reminded me of my first amp (a tweed deluxe).

Peace,
Jimmy

Okay Martin! I can see this all coming😊🎸. Your report on the modifications will be soon and I will be ordering my parts.😊. I guess I might as well get ahead of the program and get the stuff coming. Did you say you are getting a speaker other than the Swamp Thang? I think I will go ahead and order the tubes and wait until after your report for the speaker.

NOOOOO I'm modding the V5 ONLY !!!

Here's what I ordered....

JAN Phillips AT7 and Tung-Sol EL84. Some have also swapped the speaker for an Emnence 820H which apparently really opens it up.

The Eminence speaker arrived today !! Tubes are scheduled for Thursday. I'm going to wait and make all the changes at one time because the tube change will be easier with the old speaker out.

Well the tubes showed up today, so I did the upgrade today. It's now a rockin' little amp with a nice crunch to it....However it's not the sound I was hoping for....that V22 still reigns high as my best sounding amp. The V22 has a nice clean sound that just can't be beat. The V5 will make a nice practice amp though.

I know this sounds ridiculous, but hook a musical signal through your V5 and leave it looping the tunes all day when your out. It's doesn't need to be loud, just enough to get the cone moving a bit as they are quite stiff when new. The Eminence speaker after a few days of that will break in and sound better. I did the same with my Vibro-Champ 8" speaker and it made a world of difference.

After going round and round with all of your great suggestions, in the end I just couldn't leave the Fender family and ordered a Blues Jr. NOS....

As they used to say on the old Certs commercial, you're both right:
  • The V5 is an old-school, single-ended class-A triode amp, so by design it's going to sound very different than the V22 (also my #1 amp, as I'm sure you're aware). I assume you're using your V22 mostly if not exclusively in pentode mode, which is more Fender-like in its overall tonality; triode mode sounds much like a "bigger" version of the V5 - softer/smoother attack, less "toppy"/more-midrangey response, and quite reminiscent of a pre-Top Boost Vox in this regard - when the EQ is set at 12:00. In addition, you're also limited by the single tone control - highly interactive with the Gain/Volume controls BTW, and if you haven't done so already I'd recommend playing with all three (as well as the rear-mounted power attenuator) to dial in some cool tones - and the smaller cabinet/speaker, which leads me to:
  • You definitely need to give that Eminence hemp-cone some serious break-in time - mine first began to really come into its own after about 40-50 hours, and my Swamp Thang took a good 75-100 hours to fully develop its tone. I prefer to do my break-ins the old fashioned way - pedal-to-the-metal/loud-as-you can-stand-without-hearing-damage (I live in a detached private house so I have no issues with neighbors) - but Rockabilly's suggestion is a good one, and I suspect Eminence uses a similar method with their $20 "broken-in" factory option...
