Budget Electric
Hi everyone, first post here. I'm a low intermediate player. I've got a second hand Squier Vintage Modified Tele that has some action/intonation problems that can't be fixed, and I want to upgrade to something with a nicer playability. My budgets around €300 (up to about 350$). The used market here is limited so I'll probably get new. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hi D.Mac, welcome to the AGF. I'm not sure what is the cause of your action issue but have you considered shimming the neck? That may be a solution. Some people have even used business cards or a playing card as the shim to slightly change the neck angle and approve the action.

Hi Dru, I took it to a local luthier for a set up and he told me the neck was bowed and the end truss rod had been worn away to nothing so it couldn't be adjusted. I'll give the business card thing a go though.

I don't know how much guitars cost in the UK but are is a Squire Classic Vibe an option at that price range? Lots of great reviews on them and they cost a little less than a Mexican Tele. |

In that price range I would probably look for Epiphone or Yamaha Pacifica. The Epi ES339 is especially nice, but sadly discontinued I am afraid - maybe you could get lucky and find one at a discount, though. I would also look closely at Epi SG, but my actual experience with this model is very limited, I just have a hunch that they are a real contender. Pacifica 510V, 311H, or 112V would all be decent choices depending on taste and budget. The Squire Classic Vibe Tele is also a very solid option, but out of your price range, I believe - but not by much, so if you could stretch a little or maybe wait for the right deal, that should not be ruled out either.
Good luck! |

Thanks for all the responses. The Pacifica models look good, I've never got to play one but I've never come across a bad Yamaha. I've been told Epiphone can either be very good or very bad (though it's mostly Fender players that say that to me) so unless I play it in person I'm not sure. A Classic Vibe Tele or Strat would be ideal, they go for around €420-€450 (about $500). If a used one comes along it would be great, but I couldn't justify that much money on a guitar yet.

Personally? I'd pick up a PRS SE or a Schecter. I have the PRS Santana SE and it's an amazing player for a less expensive guitar. But, looks like you can find a Squire neck donor cheap!

PRS se- used...for the price these are awesome.
Gretsch Electromatic solid body- I do not know the model numbers but they have a single cut with/without bigsby that you can easily get for $350. Also they have a double cut with a bigsby that is nice. This is one of my favorites, and most inexpensive guitar, but I cannot put it down. And when friends are over, it is always fought over vs Gibsons, Fenders etc. |

Yeah! I had a C1+...neck is like a mirror image to the PRS SE...I have no doubt they were in that same factory. A friend had the C1 Classic...really great players for the money.
