If that's happening, the pickup is too close to the strings.

That's a Nashville style Tele. I have one. I love it. I think I lost some of the real twangy Tele vibe with the noiseless pickups, but overall, this is an extremely versatile setup. I have a mini toggle for the neck-bridge combo. The other mini is for a Piezo, but that's a separate discussion. I don't find string pull to be an issue. I have a Duncan Vintage Hot Stack in the middle.

This is as traditional as I get. When I use all 3 pickups, the magnetic pull sometimes throws satellites out of orbit.

Whats the middle pickup? Looks like a Fender Texas special!

Fender Noiseless Strat middle. This was before there were different types of Fender Noiseless pickups. I'm unsure what model replaced this.

And what I posted is true. You will experience more choking of the strings, especially when you play up high, when a middle Strat pickup with magnets as the pole pieces, is added.

If that's not an issue then go for it.

It happens unless you screw the middle pickup right down into the pickguard like Yngwie Malmsteen does. And that's also why he does that: because the guitar sounds better to him.

And it's why my Strat was like this:

Then went to this:

And finally went to this:

I know of what I speak.

Being able to hear the difference between a 2 pickup and 3 pickup guitar, takes golden ears, especially in the mix with effects.

I also recall Yngwie not wanting the middle pickup because he often picked in that area.

Lighten up Francis it was a joke.

You should see my 'strat' with the Fralin blender and in phase out of phase, coil tap, series and so on switching I can get anything from Tele, Strat, Les Paul and more.

Yes. Having that pickup there affects my picking style and it's a kind of in the way on my Strats. I like that it isn't in the way on my Tele.

One of the reasons I play differently on a Tele than a Strat.

You seem to have misinterpreted my post. I was just giving the guy the link, and gave him the general tenor of the thread. I don't know what joke of yours I missed, and I don't think the post you quoted was directed at you in any way. At least I don't recall that as my intent.

You keep making these universal pronouncements, as if they are invariably true rather than possible outcomes. So yes, if you're stupid enough to put a hot Strat pickup in there and raise it up against the strings, then if course that's a problem. But there are plenty of low-output pickups that work beautifully in that position, without being screwed down to the deck. They don't "choke" anything and don't cause it to sound "plinky".

There was a lot of discussion of this once over at TDPRI, with very mixed views. The type of pickup, though, seemed to be the key variable.

I do understand how that middle pickup can get in the way, though, in terms of picking. I may play with the pickup heights on mine, see if I can keep the pickups in balance, and keep the guitar sounding good while lowering the pickups. I love the versatility, though.
