Default Taylor Pick Guards: Plan B?

I never have really like the factory Taylor pick guard. Any of you guys ever replace it with something else? Got any pix?

I like the static cling clear Taylor Pick Guard. If you clean the guitar first and then work the bubbles out, it becomes nearly invisible. You can leave it on as long as you want and take it off whenever you want.

No pics as I can't even get it to show up on them!

I love the way the Taylor pickguard compliments the curves of Taylor x14ce model guitars. The Taylor Grand Auditorium CE design, I feel, is one of the most aesthetically-pleasing guitar designs I've ever seen.

To get to your concern, you could remove the factory-installed pickguard and play your Taylor nude or place a static-cling Taylor pickguard on it for easy on/off protection, if needed. As for a permanent other-shaped replacement for the Taylor pickguard, I can't think of anything as nice.

Regards,

Hi Mike,

I've never done it but here's a link to a Frets.com article on pickguard removal:

Here are some pictures I collected from AGF members over the years who placed non Taylor pickguards on their Taylor guitars.

Also, R. Taylor does a Martin style Pickguard on their Series 3 Dread.

Thanks a bunch for those images Bill. I was hoping someone had some images of a few Taylors with Grevens on them. I love Greven's and have replaced both factory pick guards on my 000-15 and HD-28 with 50's Grevens. Those images have convinced me that I will be installing a 50's Greven on my new DN8 as well when it arrives next week. Thanks again Bill.

You're welcome. That does sound like a good choice. There were a couple of other people who have been on the forum that had also had Greven pickguards on their Taylors (can't seem to find the pictures) but anyway I really do like them too and it is a good alternative.

I would love to see pictures of your DN8 when you get it (so I can add to my growing collection of guitar porn).

That's because it's sacrilege to change the factory pickguard.

I'm not a fan of taylors guards but they just don't look right with anything else. I say Taylor or naked. (FYI, Taylor now sells all black guards in their standard shape...still a Taylor guard, but a little different at the same time)

I have heard that the procedure involves using heat (like from a blow dryer) and evenly applying it to one edge of the pick-guard, and then using something like a plastic spatula (being careful not to scratch the top) and then "working your way" across the whole thing. There will be a "tan line" evident, but if you are replacing the old one with a new one that covers the whole area you shouldn't see anything different (when done).

By all means, continue to read the other advice given.

All the best!
Bill
