Default Best "No-Name" Custom Builder

I love looking at custom builders guitars, especially before they have really made a name for themselves. I would love to know some builders you guys know that I don't. Of course, I'm not looking for Santa Cruz, Goodall, Collings and the like.

Do you have any experiences with their guitars?

Mine would be Bailey and Son's out of Augusta GA. Really great guitars!!

Check out Healy Guitars out of Easthampton, MA. Trevor's an old friend of mine from high school who I just recently found out is working as a luthier. His shop is a bit of a distance from me, so I haven't played one yet, but would like to get there one day to check out his work.

There's another Bailey (Ken) in Plant City, Florida who is building some terrific guitars.

Hi jl...

Michael Bashkin
Gerald Sheppard
Trevor Kronbauer
Brian Applegate

While some here know their names, these builders have all gained traction since 2005, but they still are not in the stratosphere price-wise, and they build amazing instruments.

But if you are hoping to do as I did and get in on the ground level as they start to be serious and rise to prominence, that is a matter of getting around and meeting them and playing their instruments in their shops or one-on-one so you can ask important questions.

When I first met Michael Bashkin the first instrument of his I played I thought to myself "If this guy can consistently builds at this level, he's building my next guitar…". After playing over half dozen I knew he was.

But I went through a bunch of builders who couldn't duplicate results, or were shoddy on their fit-n-finish or who had great fit-n-finish but were weak on responsiveness, and had no clue how to reproduce results for the demanding customer.

A couple I asked them if they could give me more sustain while maintaining their tone, and they just stared. Not my guy...

A thought - if you are not in a hurry, Healdsburg 2013 is in August and will host about 100 builders with 500 or so handbuilt guitars on display and the chance to meet and interview luthiers at every level of building from amateur to Ervin Somogyi (who sometimes attends the event), Kevin Ryan etc.

Hope this seeds more discussion

Brad Daniels of Kolaya Instrument Co. is an up-and-comer. I have one under way right now.

in the classical world i'd submit Ben Tortorici:

http://www.tortorici-guitars.com/

not really new to building but still under the radar. he just builds awesome sounding classicals. i've been playing guitar for over 29 years and have never heard an instrument like the one I played last year -before or since. it just sounded so amazing that i had to fight back open weeping in the guitar store because it sounded so good.

Forum member Jonathan Razo seems to be on a fast track to being a world class builder.

Not wanting to 'talk them down', there's a nice hand builder near where I live (midlands, England), they're called Northworthy guitars. Quite a few respectable names use them, but still relatively 'unknown' or at least, they're not widely known. Saying that, if credibility is measurable by the ability of users, Northworthy users include John Renbourn and George Harrison who had a ukulele built for him.

Mitch Keown down in Seneca, South Carolina is rapidly gaining recognition and praise for his Martin-based blue grass cannons.

I'm sorry, but I'm at a loss to help you on this one...I don't know of any "no-name" luthiers because the only luthiers I know of are ones that I can name...

Hi EC...
Can you point us to luthiers who do a wedge without asking for a higher price?
