I had an Epihone 12 string dread that I won in a poker game, and later sold it back to the original owner for college textbook money. Thinking back 35+ years later I think that was the right decision.

I did trade up my first guitar, a MIJ Starfield Les Paul Custom for the real thing, and just yesterday I learned the MIJ was made in the same factory as Ibanez were in the mid 70's. It stayed in tune and would have made a great open G guitar. But in the end having the real thing is okay too.

I once found a 70's Hagstrom that I paid $100 for in a guitar shop. I already had a Les Paul and a Stratocaster so I sold it to a buddy who had a matching bass version of the same guitar. It played well and stayed in tune. It would have been great for DADGAD and playing Kashmir during my electric daze.

Easy....

1963 Fender Strat
1968 Les Paul Custom (black with 2 pickups)
1968 Les Paul Custom (black with 3 pickups)

Sold them in 1982 - each for $600 which was a decent price back then. WHAT WAS I THINKING???????

You can see the 3 pickup Les Paul and the Strat in this photo which was taken in my dorm room at North Texas (BTW, wish I still had the hair too...)

The 1976 Fender Stratocaster my Mom gave me for graduation from high school. Traded for something different in '77. I wish I never had traded it (now) for sentimental reasons.

1967 Gibson ES-330, walnut finish. The others were sound decisions that I made without regrets.

A 1930's Arthur Hensel Artist parlor guitar. All solid woods. Needed a neck reset, and I felt I couldn't justify the expense.

A month later, I realized I could have.

I also had a Goya (laminate/MIK from the late 70s) that I purchased to fix, and made a promise to myself I'd sell, as I just wanted the case, but that guitar had something special to it - the guy who purchased it said it sounded a lot like his D28 (not better, but in the orbit). I kept my promise to myself, but wish I had kept that one.

The Hensel's the real heartbreak, though.

Yea that hurts.

Curious - What did you buy after that?

I also sold a a killer Walker OM (Brazilian / Adi). In my case it was ergonomic reasons - didn’t gel with the neck, nut, body depth. I struggled with the decision to sell, it sounded great and if you sell a walker it ain’t coming back even if you have the cash. However I now have a Sexauer and a Brondel that are wonderful tonally, equal to the walker to my ears, and are good ergonomic fits. So in my case it was for best.

One other thought - I haven’t regretted selling anything and instead have more psychological conflict from ones I am attached to but don’t play and won’t sell.

getting that out in the open was clarifying. Whew.

The one I most regret was my second or third guitar, a 1968 reissue early-50's gold-top Les Paul. It had P-90's, stop tailpiece/bridge, and a lot of soul. I bought it on time from my high school music teacher that also ran a small shop. A beautiful guitar that I have missed for 50+ years.
The other two were much later, a Martin 0000-21 Custom and a Martin OM-21 that were victims of my reignited GAS. Both were great guitars that I should have held onto.

1964 Silvertone 604
1984 Takamine F340 (lawsuit)
1997 Taylor 410

If I could get each of these back, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Only one. I sold an early 90s 000-16 to a friend to fund my M36 purchase. Wish I had it back every time I play it.

Those are very good guitars. Funny, because he had put the only major ding in it when he borrowed it for his daughter's wedding. Today, I couldn't tell you which one it was LOL.
