I think it's way more fun to buy a guitar you hope will be a "good one" and when you get it, it turns out to be great.
Happened with all of my Eastmans

But - and this is a big but - if you're gonna pay a couple large for a guitar anyway, shouldn't you want to play it first?

btw, my 18... Well, it happens to be the best one ever made.

Default dreaming

I can't say I have ever had a "dream" guitar. Yes, there's been ones I was excited to get and there has been one which remains a disappointment, though it has found a place where it fits.

I was shockingly disappointed in the sound of a sinker redwood custom Taylor I tried at a roadshow. Most gorgeous Taylor I ever saw and it sound like it was full of wet socks.

I haven't dreamt of a guitar to buy but I have had pluses and minuses along the road to guitar acquisition. If I get a dud, like a '92 SJ200 that came and went, I just resell it on eBay or CL. The only guitars I ever peddle here, TGP or Reverb are good guitars that somebody will most likely be happy with.

Dream guitars for commission is something on my bucket list. I am blown away by the guitar builds others with experience have designed here. Rye's build has been looked at by me many, many times.
Also, I am hoping I play something at the show next week that tickles a musical itch. It's fun to get new guitars, new tone woods, new designs that impress.

Dreaming is a good thing yet I am glad my acquisition rate has slowed. I still have two tonewood's I am waiting for to come up used. Unless I decide to pursue some juicy specs for my own commission dream.

No. I have been disappointed in some dreams, though.

I had extreme GAS for a Gibson SJ-200. I saw a Studio model and played it and it blew me away. The problem was GC wanted about $500 too much (after you added tax). So I was in search of a SJ.

So a guy about an hour from here had a SJ-200 True Vintage for sale in about the price range I wanted to pay. Went up there to play it and was completely bummed. While I expected a huge explosion of sound I got nothing more than I was getting with my Taylor 614. I know because I recorded them both. Truly disappointed.

Ever happen with a guitar you played in-hand or all internet orders?

Only one out of about 20! From the Bozeman, Mt. Gibson Custom shop,(1997) pure junk to me. The guy I sold it to was a friend, won't speak to me anymore. The custom hurts, cause it was expensive, and I had very high hopes. Looks great, sounds not so great.
Some have shocked me by sounding so much better than I expected: from Yamaha and Breedlove.

Yep, happened with a D-28 couple of years ago. Got it new via the internet and it turned out to be a dud.

Absolutely, and the common thread is that they were (Goodalls) all bought without playing them first.

I'd love to know how many of the affirmative replies are connected with my experience.

Are you all out of Goodalls now? I have a 1990 Rosewood Standard that
is just stellar. Played a Grand Concert cutaway at Gryphon Strings yesterday
that was also great. I have never played a Goodall that disappointed me.

Yup.

Always wanted a new D-45 and bought one a few years back. I tried hard as I could to love it, but it just couldn't hack my sonic requirements. I was very lucky to sell it on without losing any money on it.
