Rosewood embraces you like a fatherly (or motherly) figure. Ovangkol pulls no punches and gets in you face. The guitar that has stayed with me the longest is an ovangkol b&s guitar.

Rosewood and Mahogany are the kings of guitar backs. I'd take walnut over ovangkol. I'd take maple over ovangkol too.

I just bought a Taylor 458e-R 12 string. The 400 series has now both choices of B&S. I preferred the IR over the Ovangkol 458. Ovangkol sounded brighter and less depth. I can't say that I didn't like the Ovangkol 458, it has a voice of it's own.

I have my bourgeois AT vintage d now for 7-8 months . it's constructed with hide glue and the sound with the ovangkol back and sides is amazing , it has the midrange of a mahogany dread and the highs and lows that are comparible with a rosewood dread . Still happy i went with ovangkol . The only dilemma i have now is : I have a country boy deluxe ( adi/mahogany ) bourgeois and i have a chance to trade it against a AT vintage D adi/cocobolo . Now i have 2 different dreads and with 2 Aged Tone 28 style guitars it is maybe a bit much of the same thing ?
What would you do ?? |

I don't prefer specific woods, I evaluate them once they've become a guitar.
I don't advise people on which guitar I've never played, they should buy. This is a very similar question.

Voted for a rosewood just because I like most of the family timbers. Very little experience with ovangkol. Played a couple of Taylors.

I did a tour of Taylor's factory and I specifically remember hearing that Ovankol is a "stinky" wood to work with. Haven't been able to forget it.
On a serious note, Ovankol sounds, and looks, awesome. My buddy has a 2014 426ce and I love to play it. However, I played a 414ce-r the other day and fell in love. It just sounded like an ideal guitar. A large portion of high end acoustic guitars, through history and today, use a spruce top with rosewood back and sides. I don't like to fall in line and go with everyone else but they may be onto something. +1 Rosewood |
