I've stated earier in this tread that Yamaha SG's are fantastic, and I like Gretsch jets...
I even like Gibson SG's and Firebirds.

That St. Vincent certainly looks..err interessting. If you're in a Scorpions tribute band..

Ha, nah, more made-in-Japan pawn shop prize than arena rock axe. I don't think any of the guitars you've named can really sound like a Fender. Gretsches are probably closer than Gibson. And Frank Marino has at least one SG with Strat-style pickups installed. But meh, just get a Strat or Jazzmaster in whatever color least offends you.

I think those vintage beauties would be more like curvy Archtops if anything [emoji39]

But where are the Liv Tylers and Scarlet Johansons of the guitar world..?

If you want a guitar that sounds like a Strat... get a Strat.

Here's an ad from gBase for a blonde one in near-mint condition, @ $499 firm - apparently they've been discovered (FYI the Music-Go-Round in Duluth, MN has one for $329, so not everyone has gotten wise quite yet), and given their quality and rarity I can easily see the price of these doubling in the next couple years, much like the better-known SG/SBG:

https://www.gbase.com/gear/yamaha-ssc500-1982-natural

BTW, among the photos is a copy of the original '82 catalog ad (I have one of those somewhere in my archives as well), showing the available finishes - blonde, 2-tone burst, and burgundy; I own the latter and the photo doesn't begin to do it justice - it's actually a rich Gibsonesque red, much like some of the deeper finishes seen on '60s ES-330/335/345/355 semis and a bit lighter than your typical SG - and if size matters to you it's also shorter overall (but slightly wider) and easier-handling than either a Strat or an SG (closer to a Music Man in that respect). IMO when taken as a whole, what's not to like...?

And sound really great when a John Frusciante or David Gilmour play them.

Now, Fender and Gibson beeing INCRDIBLE conservative and boring when it comes to innovation and new designs, -googling something like this title feels a bit claustrofobic. These companies are so dominating and still keeps spewing out the same year after year with some new colours. All of them last century designs. A car manufacturer would be dead with this policy(!)

Fender did some cool stuff with their Pawn Shop models a couple of years back. That got shot down by corporate thinking.

Ok rant over ;-)

What options are there for a nice playable guitar like the Strat or a Jazzmaster, but not looking anything like these. (And I don't mean a silly Paul Stanley's Washburn either.) I've read it can be can be a bit of a hit and miss Eastwood. They make some fun guitars. I like Gretsch too, but not Bigsby's.

I've been considering a Tele Nashville, but ain't so sure about that twangy sound.

I wish to discover something cool I've overlooked.
One of these with the 3 single coils should do the trick

I really wish I'd liked it, I do. The mission of this tread was to discover something like this: an unknown good reasonable prized guitar. I just don't get on with that close to symetrical design of the horns. Thanks though

This Danelectro has Strat-looking pickups so could be a candidate for what you are looking for...

If you have no objections to a Telecaster body, buy one with P-90's.
Every bit as versatile as a Strat with a lot more rock grunt.
Played clean with a five way switch, it's a great guitar with lots of tonal variety and no twang. Try one out if you can, you might be surprised. I had one but thinned the herd and sold it. I wish I hadn't.

I like the Cabronitas.
My bandmate is a P90's guy, and like you said good rock grunt
but oh my God what noise they make through an amp. Dinosaour tech..
I not too keen on them for my use. I believe the Strat and Jazzmaster are more versatile with sound. (I may be wrong)

So all that twang is due to the metal bridge PU construction?

Those Mosrite clones are kinda fun cause they're so ugly looking. That one look like a useful player

Any gripes with doing shopping from reverb?

I've never played one, but this might be worth a look, http://www.parkerguitars.com/product...ial/DF523.html Has the main strat features, 3 single-coil pickups, 5-way switch, tremolo, etc., without ever being mistaken for a strat.

I don't think you got the idea. He doesn't like the Strat "look". I assume this means the shape.
