Tele Mod. add center pickup and 5 way switch!
I am heavily considering doing a mod on my USA Pro Tele. I want to add a middle pickup and 5 way switch. I am looking for a pickup that will blend well with the current setup it came with, A Zebra Humbucker and an onerwound single coil neck (lipstick) pickup. It has a coil split switch in the volume pot. I am considering a Cool rails Seymore Duncan and a standard 5 way switch. I would also consider a tone pot replacment. Anybody have any advice regarding this kind of Mod and the pickup?

If it were my guitar I'd go with SUHR or custom.
I put a custom Wiggins Brand Strat pickup in my Ibanez (center single coil) and I could easily fool people that it indeed sounded like a Strat. He even made it for me in rosewood to match my finger board. It was like $50 shipped to my door and he hand winds it to match exactly to the sound you want. If you click here you'll see my guitar on the Wiggins website, only non-Fender guitar. http://wigginsbrand.com/soundbites.html

My advice is don't do it.
The extra magnets in the middle pickup will choke the strings and make it sound plinky and out of tune when you play up high on the neck...just like a Strat. If you're going to do it anyway get a pickup like a Duncan Little 59 which has a bar magnet under the pickup coils.

I don't want a Strat!
I don't want to buy another guitar, I just want a little more versatility in one guitar. I am doing it for the second position sound of a Strat blending the middle, and bridge pickup. In position 4 it's a gamble and don't know how any certain pickup will blend with the neck pickup I have in this guitar. My overwound neck pickup sounds quite a bit like the SD Quaterpounder but not as hot. I am going to do this mod in Feb. after the Holiday rush when my tech has a bit more time cleared from his schedule. I have been tempted to go with a Fender Fat 50's or 60's reverse wound middle for Strat that will allow the Humbucker to work and not allow the middle pickup to give off that 60 cycle hum when in the 2nd position blending with the bridge. Other than that I still want one position dedicated to a neck and bridge while still having the neck only and bridge only. I suppose that could be the third position.

I had one with a Lace Burgundy in the middle. I thought it blended nicely especially with the humbucker. I will say that you lose a critical combo for a Tele (neck+bridge) so consider installing a mini switch or a push/pull to turn the neck pickup on directly (called the "neck on" mod or the "Gilmour" mod)

As I've said in another thread, I'm finicky about Telecasters. The beauty of the thing is the simplicity of its design. If you want to modify your Tele so it's more like a Stratocaster, why not get a Strat in the first place?

Then you don't need to buy a Strat, you can bring one guitar to a gig, they don't make a B-Bender for Strats, etc.

he's already got a humbucker, that's going to trump any middle pickup for string pull and a large magnetic field. |
