Anyone using a stomp box for gigging?

Any other thought on this. I love the Porchboard but can't afford one. What's a good middle-of-the-road solution. I'd even make my own maybe, I've seen a few DIY YouTube vids in that

I have had a beetroot brand stomp and haven't used it for over a year, just too tiring for my old calves.
Now I use a drum app on my iPad into my looper and it's effortless plus helps me keep time.
