First saw him with the Raspberries in Central Park May '74 (where John Lennon made an impromptu on-stage appearance - did a brief interview but declined to play) but this was my favorite - used to play it with a band back in the '80s when I could still hit those notes:

What an instantly identifiable voice. I loved this song (for the guitar hook, not the lyrics), but 1972? That early? Wow.

My wife and I first saw Eric and the Raspberries at Parma High School before they exploded onto the music scene.
At that time, they had released a single called”Don’t Want to Say Goodbye.” This was a beautiful composition that made it to number 86 on the pop charts. I urge you to give it a listen. VERY underrrated and virtually unknown it is simply one of the best songs Eric ever wrote.

RIP. I didn’t care too much for his solo stuff, but I thought the Raspberries were a great band. They pretty much invented power pop, and few did it better. I just heard Overnight Sensation a couple of days ago - great song.

One of the tributes to him noted that when asked how to learn to play guitar he replied....first learn to play piano.
