Many stations also stream online. Try KEXP here in Seattle.

Being the age I am, I'm used to finding artists on the RADIO, but all that's on the radio now is oldies and electronic enhanced pop, for the most part.

So, what places do you now go listen to find new stuff ?
I’m sure someone has already said this, but try Pandora.
Choose an Artist you like, say Amos Lee, or Chris Stapleton.
Create a channel and a load of similar artists will also play on that channel.

Thanks for these Chrisoff, listening to both online now (well one after another).

Neat idea for a discussion. I'm into Singer-Songwriters, Americana/Folk and Alternative Country music and right now, most of the new music I discover comes from Spotify. Spotify has official playlist for Singer-Songwriter, Americana and Coffee house mixes which they are always adding to. I'm also interested in local Singer-songwriters so I keep an eye on Texas music charts. There is a Facebook channel and streaming radio station devoted to this.

On Youtube I've found a few new artist through these great channels: NPR Radio Tiny Desk Concerts, Music Fog, Folk Alley, KEXP Radio and Paste Magazine's live performances. They all have great achieves of live performances.

I enjoy Spotify's curated and custom playlists. Also, I belong to another (non-guitar) message board, and the members have great taste in music. Each year, they create a thread for the current year's music, so people discuss what they like (or don't like!).

For those of you that miss an FM station with real live DJ's, kpig.com on the web or 107.5 on the fm radio dial. For $5.00 a month you can stream all the music you want 24/7. KPIG offers a free week trial period so you can decide if this americana music format is what you're searching for.

I've been streaming kpig for the last 4 years since i've moved away from Santa Cruz in 2014. Started listening to this station back when it was called KFAT. On the web it's commercial free and it's a mix of rock, country, folk and comedy.

They have a playlist you can check out to see what they have been playing recently.

Not affiliated or paid or connected to this station other than i enjoy listening to a wide range of music styles. Oink, Oink!

Lately, the YouTube rabbit hole.

Pandora. Create a station of music of someone you like and you'll hear new stuff. Some will be awful, for sure, but some will be stuff you like.

for example..

Many years ago when i first started using Pandora I made a Pink Floyd station and it would throw out alot of prog rock that I never heard before. The Pandora algorithm spit out stuff I found myself really liking, but would have never discovered on my own. Ended up spending a sheckels on Opeth and Porcupine Tree because of this.

This San Luis no commercial station has all the new artists in a stream:

http://kcbx.org/programs/category/16

Broken Spoke Folk, The Road Home and Morning Cup are full of 1 and 3 hour sets of mellow, interesting, under the radar & not obnoxious artists. Good for setting and forgetting.

The Hosts, Neil Losey and others, are always on the hunt for new music and playing rare old album takes.

Funny you mention those names. They came up as suggested, when I put in ANOTHER name.

No one single way, but for me :
  • AGF and other guitar forums: discovered Guy Clark and Rodney Crowell that way;
  • Live shows: have often discovered new acts when they've been opening for someone else. Also, we have an excellent local promoter who puts on the very best in Americana - I check the site regularly and see who's coming, then check out a few yt vids and if I like, I go to see them;
  • YouTube: quite often if I see a video by an artist I enjoy, perhaps a clip off a gig I attended, I'll check out the uploader's channel where I discover further artists.
  • Live recordings (ie what used to be called bootlegs or ROIOs): this is by far the main reason for my discovering artists. There are a number of sites out there where tapers share recordings responsibly and for free. A good live recording will show whether someone's worth checking out - for me, if they are no good live, I'm generally not interested. You also get to trust the taste of fellow tapers and I often check out other artists someone may have recorded and shared, even if I've not heard of them. Contrary to some naïve and narrow-minded artists and management companies, people who make and listen to such recordings are 90% certain to be regular gig-goers, so they become the best free publicity there is for an artist - ticket and associated merch sales generated will far outstrip any youtube or Spotify incomes. For example, as a Deadhead of some years, such recordings led me to discover the whole jamband scene - which has cost me a lot in CDs and tickets/merch.

History that's where. The best stuff can not be recreated. A work of art is a one off. I'm checking out Jelly Roll Morton again. He's like the Jimi Hendrix of the 20s. A creator of jazz. That can't happen twice.
