Gibson SG Dilemma...
There are a range of price/models for the SG. Musicians Friend has a limited edition custom shop model with 3 high-line humbucker pickups, a custom shop patterned top and seemingly the best of the best. The catch is the $4300 price tag. An SG can be had for $700. I would consider it to resell some where down the line but is it worth it?

Wait for Bob Womack to amble by - he really knows SGs. Shouldn't be long.

If you can't spring for a vintage SG standard, the Derek Trucks model, is a reasonable facsimile......and it's all in your fingers anyway. I've had my 1964 standard, since 1968!

If you're considering buying a 3 pickup SG give it a try first. I don't like the middle pickup in a Les Paul. If the pickup is high it sometimes interferes with my picking.
Aside from that, I wouldn't buy a new guitar expecting it to be a collectible / go up in value ... just in case it doesn't. I have a couple of the inexpensive SGs and I love them. Still thinking about getting a used Standard one day. |

Picked up a brand new 2013 NOS Ebony Standard for $950 w/ case at Sam Ash a few months ago. Not sure why it didn't sell - it's a good one..

I've owned (and sold) dozens of SG's since I started playing 50 years ago. I currently have four:
2011 SG Special 60's Tribute 2013 SG Std 2014 SGJ 2016 SG Std Personally I wouldn't buy that $4300 SG for two reasons: 1. As Dru mentioned the middle pickup may interfere with your playing style. It does mine. 2. You'll take a serious hit on resale value. I love all four of my current SG's. What's amazing to me is that the $500 SGJ is one of the best playing and sounding guitars I've owned. I played lots of gigs with it and it's been great. |

I agree with KY000. I have not met many SGs I do not like. Severely underappreciated guitars. Currently have a 98 Std and at 2006(?) Classic with P90s. Both of these are great. If you twisted my arm I would give up the Std but not the classic. Please do not twist my arm.

The 1st SG I ever owned was a 2000 Gibson SG Custom Supreme.
I picked it up in a pawnshop for $625 out the door. I ended up selling it because it very hard to deal with the weigh of the neck dive and the shape of the neck. The 2nd SG I picked up is a '71 Gibson SG Deluxe I also picked up at a pawnshop for $1000. I still have this one. The last SG I picked up is an '07 Gibson Ldt. ED SG-3 #006 with 3 pickups. I also picked this one up for $600 at a pawnshop. Of the 3, the '07 3 pickup SG is by far the best playing and sounding of my SG's I refuse to pay new price for any new guitar. I'd rather get a used one and get more bang for my buck. I'd go used if I were you OP. It might take some time and patience, but it should pay off in the end. Good luck in your search.

I currently have two, both of which are 2016 models. The SG Special 70s Tribute (into which I put P90s in place of the the mini humbuckers) and an SG Standard. I bough the Special new on a 6 months 0 interest promo because I loved the feel and resonance of that individual guitar. The satins finish and the chunky neck both feel comfortable and it's a fun guitar to play. The Standard was a bit of an impulse buy from Kijiji and it's also a nice one, but I'm still on the fence over whether it's going to stick around.
Also, I don't think buying a guitar as an investment is a wise move. |

Sorry I'm late to the discussion. My article about a 2016 Limited Edition Standard is over HERE. By reading it you may get the impression that the Standard level of trim and whatnot is my basic level. If you did, you'd be right. Bob

I love listening to Mark Karan of Ratdog(Bob Weir) blitz on his SG. Incredible tone.
