Used CA Legacy Tone
I was looking at a used Legacy at GC. It had been well played, but still had some life in it. The low E tone sounded like a thud. Muddy, boxy? But the other strings sounded good. The sales man blamed it on the strings being dead. Is this normal tone for older Legacy's? I had a RS W1000N2 and stupidly traded it in. Like the new DR1000's but can't find them used. Can't afford new.

New strings would for sure help. A lot of people who played these back when they were really popular liked a brighter string on them because they have so much bass projection. Yes they produce a pretty good thud as you say. Put some fresh wires on it and maybe even an 80/20 string or the Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze strings and it will still have that thud only much clearer.
I've owned a good many different Carbon guitars and have settled with Emeralds being my overall favorite but when I want that kind of "Martin" or Big bluegrass type tone I still grab my CA Legacy.

Thinking way back to '03 when I got my first Legacy...another in '04, and '06....low E tended to thump and lack sustain up the neck (4th fret and up, even). High strings tended to be zingy. The redesign in '05ish saw a less deep (yet heavier) body, quieter, but a bit better balanced.

Did you get used to the thumpy bass or just accept it? Just playe a RS Hybrid parlor and it had more bass than the RS dread. Crazy projection fron such a small body.

Jag;
On the money with the Parlor. I have the nylon strung model and it continues to amaze me with it tonal and projection qualities. |
