Gary Busey paid $275,000.00 for Buddy Holly's 1943 Gibson J-45...in 1990. That was, at the time, the highest price paid for any acoustic guitar that I know of. At that time, pre-war D-45's were in the low to mid $100,000.00 range.

There was recent sale on eBay (last few years) of one of the 16 "M" series guitars that were produced in the 1930s that Roy Rogers played. It wasn't the actual one that he played, just one of that batch of 16, and it went for $3,750,000.

The July, 2009 issue of The Sounding Board, put out by Martin, states that Roy Rogers 1930 OM-45 Deluxe sold at Christies Auction for $554,500.00. It also said that Rogers bought it used from a pawn shop for $30.00 in 1933. Quite a markup. (Sorry, TJ, I didn't see your post before I put mine up.) Hmmm....two different prices from two different sources......anyway, it went for more money than I have!

Adjusting for inflation, and considering average wages at the time, Gene Autry's original D-45 might make it. For collectors items, the handful of pre-war D-45's are pushing $1 mil per.

The difference above might be between the top bid and the amount paid (which would include commission, etc).

Clapton's '39 000-42 Martin went for $791,500.00 at Christies in '04...

I believe CF Martin also purchased a Pre-War D-45 for over a Million or so to put in their museum...

I read a release on the Rogers OM-45. It said it sold for $375 plus the premium. It was a total of something like $405. That's what provenance will do for an item at auction.
