Yamaha SJ 180
I was wondering what years Yamaha came out with the SJ 180. My girlfriend has one she never plays but I do although it needs a neck reset. I was wondering what the yamaha guys knew about it and maybe I can try to find the serial number to see if ya'll could help me date it. Thanks for any help

Forget it. The neck is epoxied. Gotta find someone willing to cut the neck off and convert it to a bolt on. It would cost upwards or more than the value

Thanks for the info. I was wanting more info then anything else. She isn't looking to sell or to get the neck fixed but it still sounds pretty good. I have fun playing some chords but at the 12th fret the action is just a little too high.
Thanks again |

You can still maybe tweak the truss rod. Sand some on the saddle. Little stuff to help it play the best it can. A pro set up can do wonders even on a slightly bowed neck

I picked up an SJ-180 about a couple weeks ago. It is the best sounding instrument for the price i bought it for. Do whatever it takes to make it playable.

I am. I think it may need a truss rod adjustment and it really needs a new saddle and nut, the nut is real high anyways so that would help the action. The action isn't too terrible but the neck has a bit of bow at around the 12th fret. The guitar has no case so I have it leaning strings towards a wall to bend the neck back a bit. It was always the other way for about 5 years so I think that may be a cause. It really needs to be humidified but I have nothing to do that. It's a project and it's been in my girlfriends family for years so that's why I'm not really doing much to fix the problem. I don't want to screw up the neck by turning the truss rod the wrong way.
I don't have any money so I can't bring it in to a tech but I'm pretty good with my hands which makes me think I can do a lot of it myself. Once I get some money I'm thinking about getting some nut files because I want to start building some electric guitars so having some nut files will be good for me. Thanks ya'll for helping me |

Sorry. They're possible to do, not a walk in the park like a hide glued joint. I do them for $200-$250, bolt on conversion. I just (finally!) joined here, wasn't able w/ yahoo, got a gmail account. Hi, my name's Jeffrey, and I'm a Yamaholic... |
