Custom Side Dot Markers
I'm getting a Hatcher Greta and often play with a capo on the 2nd. Any thoughts on the best configuration of dot markers that won't create too much confusion when I switch back and forth. Sorry for the dumb question buy I'm not very mathematical/analytical.

Interesting idea. I wonder if you could have two sets of side markers.
For example have standard style little round dots for the standard fret numbers such as: 3: single dot 5: single dot 7: single dot 9: single dot 12:double dot 15:single dot and then, have a second set of markers that look quite different (easy to distinguish and not mix up) 5:square 7: square 9: square 11: square 14: rectangle So one set could be looked at for normal open strings and you could refer to one set when using the capo. You could even test if it works for you by adding stickers to the side as a prototype before committing. By combining, you will have two sets of markers side-by-side. Or.....even better idea: make them different colors. For example: white dots and black dots I like that idea even better but it depends on your binding

Fascinating. That certainly is a possible solution. Wonder how confusing it would be?

I've sometimes struggled with this... I wondered whether it would be possible to have a sliding insert on the side of the neck so you could "slide" the dots up and down depending on where the capo is. Or what about removeable inserts that could be placed into any position (with holes drilled for each and every fret on the side of the neck)... much more fiddly. Or clip on side markers?
I'll be interested to hear what you come up with. |

I probably play half of my repertoire capoed on the 2nd fret, and the remainder open or capoed on the 1st or 3rd fret. I rarely get confused by the fret markers. When capoed on the 2nd, the:
3, 5, 7, 9, 12, and 15 markers become 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 13 markers. Granted, I don't spend a lot of time on the higher frets, but I do use them on occasion. I would be inclined to have the standard markers... |
