"Long Strange Trip", Dead documentary
Coming to Amazon Prime subscribers next week, a 4 hour streaming Grateful Dead documentary produced by Martin Scorcese, getting excellent critical reviews... "It's almost like being at a Dead concert" /Vanity Fair.
Has anyone here seen it yet?

If you don't subscribe to that service, can you pay a rental fee to just watch the doc?

I'm subscribed to Amazon Prime, and my wife first saw the promo saying it was going to be shown in June, and tipped me to it...
I'll definitely watch it... I can also say that Amazon Prime has a LOT of music and artist documentaries, some main stream, some not...but if you dig a little there's lots of good stuff to watch... |

I'm sure I will see it at some point... always loved the Dead, once they figured out how to tune their instruments! Saw them for the first time ~1967 and they were "walking out bad"... I think it was around 1970 when they hit a wonderful groove with their performances, and throughout the 70's, the balance of their shows was performed at a very high level... (no pun intended, but I'll take it!)
I remember seeing the Grateful Dead Movie when it was still in "rough-cut" form... I may have been in Vermont at the time and drove up to Dartmouth with my brother to see this 4 hour+ extravaganza! Was almost like going to one of their shows, but with a lot more weak spots... I don't know what Scorcese could unearth that I don't already know or haven't experienced, but I will give it a look and listen...

I plan to give it a look when it's available on Amazon Prime.
Went to my share of shows, starting in '73 and continuing through '90. Here is an article from the NYTimes about the film/director. I like how the director talks about how democratic and authentically American he thinks the Dead were. An interesting way to look at them and their scene. |

A suggestion for the Dead Heads
To help pass the time until this is available, may I suggest taking out your Grateful Dead Movie DVDs and watching the China Cat outtake.

Netflix streaming also has a really good documentary on Bob Weir called "The Other One."

I also watched The "Other One, the long strange trip of Bob Weir" on Netflix which an hour and 24 mins.
Interesting I wonder if a 4 hour doc. reflects the the transition that the band itself made from 3 to 8 min. songs to the long, swirling, and sometimes rambling explorations that ran the gamut from musically interesting studies on musical expression to boring flights of gibberish.

Kesey!
Quote:
In the unfinished version of the Grateful Dead movie that I saw, there was a lot of footage from the Acid Tests, as well as some juicy stuff from Kesey's bus, with Neal Cassidy driving... For another angle on that era, I would suggest reading Tom Wolfe's book, "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test"... the Dead were a big part of all that. Ken Kesey did not like the book at all; understandable because Wolfe put a bunch of information "out in the open", back when Kesey was still dealing with a lot of the legal nonsense he had gotten himself into...

I'm glad I watched it, lots of interesting footage and commentary. Not a big fan of the 5 minutes of credits glued to the end of every episode. I watched the first group of credits but couldn't fast forward or stop the episode during any of the others. Annoying.
The demise of Keith and Brent was not dealt with, though the parts regarding Pigpen were really well done. The always lively discussion of Donna's contribution to the band was missing. We did see a clip of her off key wailing on "Playin'" and it was left at that. Robert Hunter's very brief appearance is just perfect. Loved the part about the different "categories" of Deadheads ... the bit on the tapers was fabulous. Al Franken was a nice touch. Lots of love in the early days of the band, they were well beyond "tight." The difficulties between band members (and their spouses) in the latter days was not discussed. Overall, really well done.
