Default Never forget what this weekend is about...

My uncle. WWII, Pacific theater. Made it through the war, passed away a couple of years ago at 96. A man and a half...

Memorial Day honors the nation's war dead, those that died while serving in the Armed Forces.

I always honored everyone that served, but I guess that's really veterans day. My mistake I guess. I'm sure everyone is relieved that you corrected me, which of course was totally necessary.

You're right,of course, but it's "...those who died..." Not normally a grammar cop but in this case I need to distinguish a living person from an inanimate thing.

I personally know of no one who died in a military conflict that I can honestly say I cared about. Kind of a silly way to go when you think about it long enough but any death will do that regardless of circumstances. Other than of natural causes, humanity takes much entertainment in all forms of courting death whether in war or recreation so I tend to group them together when cause/effect is considered. Basically, never felt much about it one way or the other because of that. Even when I was in uniform and at risk I still didn't. I was "in the business of" and left it at that.

Then one day found myself standing on the USS Arizona Memorial and that all changed.

I agree with you, Barry, WWII veterans should also be honoured on Memorial Day; there aren't many of them around any more.

That's a great photo.

I get very choked up when I think about the loss of life, but those men and women were doing what they had to do. War is wasteful, but a fact of our lives here. They gave everything for this country and no matter what the cause it can only be repaid in part by us remembering all of them.

My dad survived WWII. His younger brother survived The Korean War.

I never met their older brother whose bomber went down somewhere over the Battle of The Bulge.

Always a mixed bag of emotions and contemplative thoughts for me. We must never forget those who gave all. But how do we truly honor that sacrifice ?
Is paying tribute one day year really remembering and honoring enough ?
Or perhaps do we truly honor and remember, by trying to spend some or all of the other 364 days trying to figure out, if and how we might proceed to make further such sacrifice a thing of history, rather than a repeating cycle ?

My father (survived) serving in the Army Air Forces as a tail gunner in the Pacific theater.
He returned started a family and became a high school history and social studies teacher.
On all the memorial days until his death at 86 he asked the above questions,
It was not rhetorical questions it was simply a contemplative observation of history.

My Dad volunteered and served in the Navy in the Pacific during WW II. He saved this letter which he received about six months after being discharged. I now have it framed with B+W photos of him in uniform with his mother and his wife (my Mom) along with medals he received while serving. My parents were married just two weeks prior to December 7th, 1941 and shortly thereafter he went off to war. This is always something I revisit each Memorial Day.

For history buffs, a well written letter in 1945 from the Secretary of the Navy, James Forrestal, which was sent to all who served in the Navy in WW II.

The seemingly "merging" of Memorial Day and Veteran's Day in many people's minds has long been a pet peeve of mine. While both should be honored and our veterans celebrated, Memorial Day is a day set aside to remember those who died defending this country. I don't think that should be "watered down", so to say, by making it also about living veterans. That is what Veteran's Day is for. Many say, including my brother, who I just had this argument with, it's always a good time to thank a vet... and that's true. But, I truly feel those who lost their lives in defense of this country deserve their own day.....
