WAYNE HENDERSON MUSIC FESTIVAL AND GUITAR COMPETITION

It's almost that time of year again ! THE WAYNE HENDERSON MUSIC FESTIVAL AND GUITAR COMPETITION !!!! Always the third Saturday in June, rain or shine. This years event is featuring the Kruger Brothers (among others) http://www.waynehenderson.org/. As usual, first place in the guitar competition is a Wayne Henderson Guitar and another one of his gems will be raffled off. Registration deadline for competition is approaching. The competition is stiff.

If you never have been to this event and like blue grass and old time music, it doesn't get much better. The guitar competition draws the best competitive blue grass pickers in the country and the professional entertainment is always top notch in blue grass and old time music (you can see from the line up this year is no exception). Of course, Wayne is also very visible, accessible, good for a few jokes and stories and always an incredibly kind and gracious host. (Not to mention he plays every year and remains one of the best pickers in the world). EJ Henderson is also there and happy to talk guitars and Ukes. Alan St John (author of "Clapton's Guitar") attends and his book is for sale in the Grayson Highlands Park Concession stand at the venue. I found the majors players in the book more than happy to share an autograph and some reflections on the book. Come with an umbrella or rain gear as the "rain or shine" stipulation is accurate, so you need to be prepared to listen to music in the rain. Concessions are also on site for food and drink and family friendly events to entertain the youngsters are scheduled throughout the day.

Proceeds go to the Wayne Henderson Scholarship Fund for young students to learn to play traditional Appalachian instruments and perform traditional Appalachian music.
