A reflection I'd say...

When I was a teen back in the Philippines, I remember my parents proudly purchasing a brand new dining room set made entirely of narra. I remember it as very sturdy and heavy wood. Close to 3 decades later and my parents still have this same set.
I also remember folks talking about narra guitars back then but this was way before I was interested in guitars.

You mean the bit of binding where the two sides meet? That's what it is then, and it is a way a finishing that part of the guitar for those who don't prefer to make a clean join between the two sides. I have always thought the pictured method looks a bit clunky, though I have done it, and prefer to use my skills to create a miter so that the side appears to make an impossible 90 degree turn. I do the same thing on a cutaway point, again preferring the cleaner look, and others prefer to treat that too as an additional binding opportunity. Different strokes.
Haven't built with Narra. |

I was able to get some sets out of a quartered Red Narra plank I picked up. The density of the stuff I've got measures about 45lbs / cubic foot. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'm presuming this is within the range that work fine for an all-Narra.

Narra
From what I have read, I would not hesitate to use Narra on a guitar. it was on a short list a few years back. I have since seen samples that looked nicer than the one I had considered. It's supposed to smell spicey too.

To update, I went ahead and built a dread, Narra with Lutz top. In a few words I'd describe it as having a clear balanced tone, but what is noticeable are the beautiful highs.

Narra is a great neck wood and what we used most at Gilet Guitars in Sydney.
It makes for a nice back/sides to. Very stiff and very stable wood. |

Missed this! Yes my mom and dad... though I'm an American! I believe however that kamagong is the most prized wood in the Philippines.... even felled or recovered from demolition or storm, it cannot be exported without written permission form their Forestry office...

Did a quick recording with a Zoom Handy Recorder. Are you guys hearing what I am?
To my ears, there's a delightful richness to the high E string that just makes it stand out. Recording captures it beautifully. https://soundcloud.com/user-789780146/narrasoundclip Last edited by Szk; 11-07-2016 at 10:35 AM. |
