Classic '70s tv shows
Anyone a fan of '70s tv shows? I'm a big fan of sitcoms like All in the Family, Sanford and Son and Three's Company. From a different angle, Columbo is one of my all time favorite shows - Peter Falk was amazing in that role.
How about you? |

I'd like to see "Sound Stage" shows, on PBS up here in Michigan, repeated!

I like watching old TV (broadcast on the digital side channels here in my area of the US). Most of what I sample is old 50's and early 60's shows, shows that I might have watched in my youth or were on too late or were too grown up for me to watch in my youth. Naked City, Have Gun Will Travel, Johnny Staccato, Route 66, Peter Gunn, The Twilight Zone, the early Alfred Hitchcock Presents and so on.
I didn't own a TV for much of the 70s, and perhaps that's why there's not a lot I watch from that decade. I have now seen most of the Kolchak: The Night Stalker shows from 74-75 though, even though I only saw a couple when they were new. I found them cheesier in the special effects than I recalled, and Darren McGavin and some sharp lines scattered in the scripts can't really bring up to classic status, even though the show was influential. There's some good stuff done with the music scoring in it though, something I didn't remember. My teenaged son is completely mystified why anyone would watch Kolchak, besides the super low-budget monsters there the overall disbelieve in the era for him: Typewriters! Cameras! Tape Recorders! It so archaic it might as well be a silent movie from the 20s as far as he sees it. I think Peter Falk is great and I enjoyed a couple of Colombo episodes back in the day. I should revisit that show and see I suppose.

I'll occasionally take a stroll down TV memory lane, but for the most part, I'm struck by how cheesy most of the programming was back then...
Even the few I remember rather fondly didn't age well... So, I'd rather not watch them again than realize most of them view like grade B movies today... As always just IMO... |

I spent most of the '70s overseas (Philippines, Japan, Vietnam...and, yes, Hawaii) so I missed a lot of programming. A couple I liked were Hawaii 5-0 and The Night Stalker. A '50s show I enjoy now is Peter Gunn. From the '60s I liked Laugh In, The Monkees, Batman, and Then Came Bronson.

From that era, I remember as a kid I loved the Munsters and the Adams family (they were older but I watched them in the 70s as reruns I guess). I watched Green Acres, I loved Hogan's Heroes. We watched Happy Days every week.

One of my favourites was:
"This is Jim Rockford. At the tone leave your name and message, I'll get back to you" In the UK we got most US 'cop' shows, Kojak, Starsky and Hutch, etc, etc. We didn't get all the US sitcoms, but Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, Laverne and Shirley were personal favourites as was Soap, which I found hilarious as a kid. Columbo, Newhart, All In the Family, Cheers, and the Waltons come to mind. I’m not positive they were all in the 70s, but that’s my recollection.

I'm binge watching the entire Rockford Files for the second time. I really enjoy that series, but the attitude toward women seems strange in this "Me Too" era. When Jim is walking with a woman, he always grabs hold of her forearm/elbow. I also find it interesting to see how actors, like Gerald McRaney, pop up in different roles, as well as his brother, Jack Garner. Jack Kelly who played James Garner's brother on Maverick, also shows up in varied roles....
