Just don't adopt his neck jointing method ... do either a dovetail or a bolt-on.

I've not seen the book yet, but what neck joining technique does he suggest?

The original book used a pinned tenion, that may have been revised by now.
The new joint is almost the same, it's bolted through the headblock to threaded inserts in the tenion.

So in starting the research stage it appears a great router is a real asset. I'm really encouraged that there seems to be a jig for most everything. From binding to bridge slotting. It makes it a little less scary haha

made some progress today
I just ordered Cumpiano's book. It will be here Tuesday.
I'm also meeting with a local luthier Friday.

I bought Cumpiano's book and skimmed through it but I found Jonathan Kinkade's book easier to follow because it had more illustrations that are in full color. I also asked lots of questions at kitguitarsforum.com and read lots of tutorial threads over at luthiersforum and videos by Obrien Guitars (he has tutorials involving LMI tools) and several other builders who post frequently at luthiersforum.com.

Finally, I also employed a lot of trial and error and often asked for help when I felt I was in over my head. If you have a luthier and a full workshop to draw upon you're off to a great start.
